INTRODUCTION World NGO Day 2014

A new generation of NGOs, as part of a multi-sectoral approach

“NGOs have always been at the forefront of social movements and changes. The European Commission greatly
values their willingness to act, their independence and above all their deep and genuine concern for the well-being
of the communities they serve. As European Commissioner for Development I have special admiration for the
activities that development NGOs carry out, often in very dangerous environments. I’m glad to see that the
relationship between the Commission and NGOs, which has evolved rapidly and stretches back over 30 years,
is now moving towards a genuine partnership. On every single day of the year, all over the world, NGOs are working hard for the people and communities they have pledged to help. It’s only right that, on just one of those days, the world should celebrate NGOs and thank them for the tremendous work that they do”.

Mr. Andris Piebalgs

European Commissioner for Development
the European Commission

“The challenges facing countries today cannot be solved by governments alone. Or by the private sector. We are now       beginning to appreciate the advantages that a multi-sectoral approach to development - including civil society and       NGOs, governments and private enterprise - can offer. Moreover, in many cases it is civil society that most closely       reflects the grassroots aspirations and goals of ordinary people. By building strong and credible NGOs, we are       helping to ensure the sustainability of our future.”

    Dr. Tarik M. Yousef

      CEO of Silatech (Qatar)
and the World NGO Day Goodwill Ambassador

“The tireless efforts of NGO leaders and volunteers around the world and the energy they dedicate to the myriad initiatives for which they are responsible are the perpetual motion machine of this world. They create boundless
energy and make the seemingly impossible happen. Without them we would be bereft of the global leadership we so desperately need, and without which the world would be a poorer place”.

Ms. Almas Jiwani

President UN Women Canada
and the World NGO Day Goodwill Ambassador

Your NGO Day: A Generation of New NGOs

Embarking on the post 2015 development agenda will require levels of collaboration among all stakeholders, the likes of which we have not seen before. Todays challenges require collective efforts, as well as a willingness to innovate, to evaluate what works best, and to learn from the experiences of others. Let us, as NGOs and representatives of civil society, take the lead through innovative strategies and effective, sustainable partnerships for action.

Each NGO TIME SHOW is a chance for NGOs to stand in front of a panel of experts and showcase the important work their NGOs do, their initiatives and projects. A platform and an opportunity for grass-root NGOs to get recognition.
